Last Saturday, my lovely boyfriend finally took me whale watching in Nelsons Bay! I’ve only been asking for what seems like forever…
It was a very last minute decision so we hadn’t booked anything. We just jumped in the car and headed towards Nelsons Bay. When we arrived, we hit up the excursions kiosk and booked a trip on the MV Spirit, which runs twice a day at 10am and 2pm. We had timed it perfectly to grab lunch in a diner just off the docks.
We climbed on board and set sail a little after 2:15pm.
I honestly didn’t think we would see any whales. I thought it was too late in the season but I am sooo glad I was wrong. The information officers told us to look out for what looks like steam as this is how you know there’s a whale in the water. The spray from their blowholes can reach up to 2 metres. We were so lucky – We saw two fully grown whales and a bub. The bub put on a bit of a show, breaching the water over and over.
I’ve never seen a whale before, let alone so close. It was pretty amazing to see them in their natural habitat. We also saw some dolphins and pelicans in the bay so for $60, this little boat trip was a steal. All in all, a great day and highly recommended!
